Product Bite: A Smartwatch Just for Kids

Last week, we published a Product Bite on the popular Queen Elsa doll. Continuing our focus on toys, interactive electronic gadgets are always much wanted by kids of any age. Wearables and smartwatches have been the “in” thing this past year, and are only going to grow in popularity in 2015. While many adults are anxiously awaiting the release of the Apple Watch, kids are not far behind in wanting to wear technology on their sleeve at all times. Walmart convened a panel of children to compile their “Chosen by Kids” top holiday toys list. At the top of that list is the VTech Kidizoom smartwatch.

This watch lets kids take photos, record videos, play games, and of course, tell the time! So cool. Needless to say, this is a hard find at the last minute. Looking at the aggregated view of the product in the Indix product intelligence app across six online stores where it is being sold, I saw that the average price across all instances has steadily increased since the middle of November.

In the past month, the average price of the product has increased by 14%. Clearly, as demand grows, such changes are expected. The average price was highest on December 11 at $61.67, probably around the time when people started their Christmas shopping. The regular price of the product is $59.99, as was reported by Marketwatch when the story about the top holiday toys was published in September.

Today, the price of the product ranges from $49.89 to $89.99, indicating that some sellers are charging a premium, as demand exceeds supply. Similar to the Elsa doll, the Kidizoom smartwatch is on rollback at Walmart but not currently available for ordering online. The children were certainly not kidding around when they voted this as the most wanted toy of the season!
