Product Bite – Are Yoga Pants Taking Over the World?

I recently read this article on NBC News saying that the sale of jeans fell 6% last year. Considering that jeans are as American as apple pie, that’s a big number. This decline has been attributed to the rise of clothing that emphasizes comfort, or as the article dubs it, “athleisure”.

They are talking about the growing number of women wearing leggings and yoga pants no matter what their level and range of activities. Then it struck me. I haven’t bought a pair of jeans in forever either. But I do own multiple pairs of yoga pants.

Out of curiosity, we searched our infinite product database for women’s yoga pants. We looked at over 2,700 products across 116 brands and 73 stores. Interestingly, the product count over time shows that almost 1,900 products have been added to the mix just since September 3rd.

Marketplaces like Etsy and Amazon Marketplace have particularly shown an increase in product count and assortment. This could possibly mean that the growing trend of “athleisure” is giving smaller merchants a chance to show off their wares and have an impact on the market.

Given the variety of colors and patterns that yoga pants are available in, it’s no wonder that they are rising in popularity. Keep ‘em coming!
