With the success of Pokémon Go, “augmented reality” has come to the forefront of technology. It’s hard to walk down the street without seeing someone try to capture a Charmelon or Raichu, and Tim Cook has said that Apple is doubling down on the technology. Aside from causing pedestrians to stupidly wander into traffic, however, Pokémon Go indicates that we’re ready for augmented reality in a way that we weren’t when Google Glass lived and died. How might this change the way we live, work, and shop?
We’re already starting to see some changes as Pokémon Go allows users to purchase Lures to attract more Pokémon to their locations (assuming they’re located near a PokeStop). If Niantic is smart, they’ll allow retailers to sponsor locations to create win-win financial situations.
