Born and brought up in the Steel City of Bhilai, Pratik came to Chennai for his master’s degree and hasn’t left since. Talented, hardworking, and passionate, he enjoys photography and travel as much as computer science and building predictive models. We sat down with Pratik to learn more about him.
What is your role at Indix?
I’m part of the Data Science team at Indix. I’m primarily involved in building predictive models for categorizing products and for automated extraction of product attributes from retail webpages. The team as a whole performs applied research: collecting ground truth datasets, performing exploratory data analysis, literature surveys, and training, evaluation and improvement of models to satisfy business needs and deploying them all the way to the production systems.
What did you do before Indix?
I did my Master’s of Science by Research in Computer Science and Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras. My research thesis was in Graph Mining, specifically on Scalable Role Discovery in Social Networks.
Why did you join Indix?
I always wanted to be part of a startup, since they provide you numerous learning opportunities. My interests in Machine Learning and Large Scale Data analysis had a significant overlap with my role at Indix.
What have you learned working for a startup?
The biggest learning for me is being able to adapt to any and multiple roles at work. Startups are very dynamic, you need to respond to the changes quickly and take ownership.
What technologies or trends get you most excited?
Deep Learning. The ability to learn representations by building complex concepts from simpler ones is promising.
What do you do for fun?

What is your favorite technology product?
Liftware – a product designed to help people with hand tremors eat more easily.
