What is your role at Indix?
I work on the Product API team responsible for serving product information at scale with rapid response times. I build solutions that enable a large number of concurrent users to search for billions of products. My goal is to build systems that can scale as we add more customers.
What did you do before Indix?
Prior to Indix, I worked at Microsoft and Amazon. Microsoft gave me opportunities to work across multiple products like Windows, SQL Server and Azure. My exposure to building embedded databases at Microsoft got me hooked to systems development. It just felt like a natural fit for my strengths and personality.
Amazon was completely different from Microsoft. It has a laser focus on customer needs. I was mostly focusing on Kindle’s client side development.
Why did you join Indix?
To be honest, I have had enough experience working for large established corporations, I know how their DNA works. I basically wanted to try something new, something like a startup where engineers’ inputs are equally respected as are those of customers and businesses. Indix’s vision and its founder’s credentials convinced me to take the plunge.
What have you learned working for a startup?
Everyone is responsible for their destiny and collectively for the company’s future. I don’t believe in slacking in any form of work. It is critical for a startup – I see startup life as riding a bicycle in the night where the headlights are powered by a dynamo. You can neither drive too fast, nor too slow. The pace has to be sustainable and your foundation must be strong to last the distance.
What technologies or trends get you most excited?
Improvements in education technologies that help bridge the gap for students wanting to access quality content is a great enabler. For countries like India where quality education is a luxury, the likes of Khan Academy and Coursera are a big boost.
What do you do for fun?
For me, work is fun! The focus and perseverance required for solving hard algorithmic or design problems is what keeps me going.
What is your favorite technology product?
Internet and all prior technologies that led to its innovation. It is a great leveler and has changed the way we live.
How would your friends describe you?
Easy to get along with, dedicated and hard working person.
